A Good Week returns for second year

A week of events celebrating the good in the world will take place from 18-24 June 2012

Seven days of events across the globe will aim to highlight people, communities and businesses who have a positive impact on the world, as part of A Good Week.

All the events and activities aim to encourage and inspire people to start doing more good. The organisers, A Very Good Company, hope to get 500,000 people across 100 towns and cities to take part in the week.

The schedule includes a Foodcycle feast using supermarket food that would otherwise be wasted, mass cycle rides, yoga, live music, exhibitions and a series of ‘life lessons’ including how to engage with other cultures while travelling and mindfulness techniques.

Each day of the week will have its own theme which will be accompanied by videos, daily ‘Do Something Good’ challenges and online Q&As with people from relevant fields. Themes include social cohesion and community, poverty and employment, and environment and energy.

Resources are also available to help people run their own events. For example, employers and teachers can download ‘good week at work’ and ‘good week at school’ packs that provide lesson plans and ideas to explore what ‘good’ means to people and how to bring more of it into their lives.

For those who can’t attend live events there will be opportunities to get involved online. Action for Happiness, an organisation leading a social movement to create a happier society, is setting up a Twitter hashtag #passonhappiness to enable people to share happy thoughts. There will also be a virtual museum of good where people can submit exhibits including images, videos and pieces of writing representing what good means to them.

“Good obviously means different things to different people. We want to find out what good means to everyone but more importantly, how we can make more good happen,” said A Very Good Company project officer Katherine Horsham. Now in its second year, organisers hope to make he event an annual occurrence.

“Our vision is a world where everyone can feel good, do good and live good, and we want A Good Week to help work towards that goal,” said Horsham.

A Good Week launches in London on Monday 18 June with the creation of a Manifesto for Good at The Gallery Lecture Theatre, SOAS whereby a panel of speakers will share their concept of good in 100 words.
