This year’s London Permaculture Festival will focus on urban permaculture
Event organisers, the London Permaculture Network, have set the urban theme in recognition of the fact that globally, more people now live in cities than in the countryside.
The festival will examine the use of permaculture in the urban environment through a series of workshops, talks and practical demonstrations from those involved in the permaculture movement. Now in it’s third year, the one day event will take place on Saturday 21 July.
“As this year’s festival is all about urban permaculture, it will look at how to grow food in cities, how to set up community groups, how to work with volunteers and how to get involved,” said Stefan Geyer of the London Permaculture Network. “In essence, permaculture is smart, sustainable design, ensuring that spaces produce optimum yields for their users but without negatively impacting on others and the planet. It can be applied to anything from community gardens, commercial farms, businesses and schools.”
The non-profit event will feature speakers from across the UK who will gather to share their knowledge and views on how to build a sustainable future. Topics will include biodynamic agriculture, examining patterns in nature, community building and a talk on Transition Dubai.
Demonstrations in the on-site garden and interactive workshops will aim to teach practical skills including natural beekeeping, forest gardening, farming in the city and cob-building.
There will also be a film room featuring permaculture documentaries, as well as information stalls, acoustic music and locally sourced food.
One of last years festival participants said: “There are lots of organisations represented which makes it a good starting point for those who never heard about permaculture. It’s also a great hub for those looking to make connections with like-minded people.”
The London Permaculture Festival will take place from 11am-6pm at Cecil Sharp House in Camden Town. Tickets are ￡5 tickets with reduced rates for concessions and those under 18 or over 60 go free.
