Taiwan has become the first country in Asia to legalise homosexual marriage
Same-sex marriage is now legal in Taiwan after the nation’s highest court declared it a “fundamental right” and “vital to safeguarding human dignity”.
LGBT activists hope the ruling – the first of its kind in Asia – will inspire neighbouring nations to follow suit. Homosexuals still face persecution across the continent including prison sentences in India and the death penalty in Afghanistan.
