Oregon becomes first US state to add third gender to ID cards

Residents can now identify as X on state-issued documents

Oregon has become the first US state to add a third gender option to state identification cards.

From July, those who don’t identify as male or female will have the option of marking a gender neutral X under the sex category on driver’s licenses and state ID cards.

According to research by the University of California, around 20,000 Oregonians identify as transgender.
