Doorstep deliveries of household items could help to reduce plastic waste, say those behind the Loop initiative

Milkmen have been doing it for years, but soon some of the world’s largest brands will offer doorstep deliveries of popular household items such as shampoo, washing powder and mouthwash, dropping them off at people’s houses in refillable and returnable containers instead of plastic packaging.

Procter & Gamble, Unilever and Coca-Cola are among the companies that have signed up to the Loop initiative, which is the brainchild of recycling firm TerraCycle. Trials will take place in New York and Paris during 2019 and could be rolled out elsewhere, if successful.
