Clean energy generation in the UK has been given a boost with the opening of the world’s largest offshore windfarm
The London Array, located more than 12 miles from the Kent and Essex coasts, is capable of generating 630MW of energy from its 175 turbines – enough to power nearly half a million homes. David Cameron, the prime minister, opened the £1.5bn venture on 4 July.
Ed Davey, secretary of state for energy and climate change, said: “This is good news for keeping our lights on and reducing carbon emissions.”
An even larger UK windfarm was given the green light by the government just a week later. The Triton Knoll project will see up to 288 turbines being built off the Lincolnshire and Norfolk coast. It will have a capacity of up to 1,200MW – enough to power up to 850,000 homes – and could create up to 1,130 jobs.
