The Great Bow Yard Vision

The Great Bow Yard, in Somerset, has recently undergone a transformation with the creation of an eco-friendly housing development. This will demonstrate to planners, builders, developers and buyers, how green’ building can be a practical solution to housing needs. Twelve timber frame houses have been constructed in the town of Taunton, each incorporating energy and resource saving features which reduce the impact that day-to-day life has on the environment. Almost every aspect of conventional design was addressed, from the direction the houses faced to the materials and production methods used, contributing to the overall aim of reducing emissions by 75 per cent more than a standard house. The building project extends beyond the construction of just housing with the eco-renovation of a Grade Two listed warehouse which has been turned into a centre for creative industries. The Great Bow Yard grounds have also been transformed, becoming a wildlife haven and communtiy area. One of the twelve houses has been designated as a permanent show house to provide an example of how they can be decorated and furnished to further the theme of minimal impact on the environment. “During the planning stage of the the show home’s interior, it was fundamental to the team at South West Eco Homes, to reflect the sustainable principles inside the home,” said Charles Couzens, Somerset Trust for Sustainable Development’s Chief Executive. “It was also very important that the materials were sourced locally and, on finishing the project, we’re delighted that as much as 30 per cent of the products are from within the county.”Although eco-housing developments are rapidly becoming commonplace in both rural and urban areas, the downside is that such homes are often built by individuals and do not offer solutions for those living on minimal budgets. The Great Bow Yard is a demonstration of how eco-friendly building techniques can be applied on a larger scale with a view to creating sustainable, practical and comfortable housing for the future.Contact: South West Eco Homes Ltd,The Old Town Hall, Bow Street,Langport, Somerset, TA10 9PRTel: 01458 259400Website: www.swecohomes.co.ukPhoto: © South West Eco Homes
