In 2003, development’ and the demolition of their premises, threatened Unicorn, an organisation established by three friends who wanted to put ethics back into the food retail industry. Unicorn, and its customers, were unwilling to lose a shop that had served the residents of Chorlton since 1996. When Unicorn asked its customers to support the co-op by investing in loan stock they anticipated strong support, the actual response exceeded their wildest dreams.
Within a week the co-op had already reached its target of £100,000, a figure that was eventually tripled. Additional finance came from Industrial Common Ownership Finance Ltd., Co-operative Action, and Triodos Bank’s Inspiring Change Scheme. The partnership generated the £1 million required to buy the property, ensuring the close relationship between Unicorn and the community will continue for years to come.
