Record number of adults leave drug treatment free of dependency

A “record” number of adults in England are leaving drug treatment programmes free of dependency, according to Crime Prevention Minister Jeremy Browne

Some 28,000 adults successfully completed drug rehabilitation programmes in 2010-11, marking a 150% increase on 2005-06 figures.

The findings come as part of a report on drug treatment in the UK, which also found that the average waiting time for drug treatment has fallen from nine weeks in 2002 to five days in 2010-11, and that four out of five adults new to treatment either complete their programme or stay in long enough “for both them and society to feel the benefit.”

Meanwhile, the Home Office has found that drug use in England and Wales is at the lowest levels since records began. Minister Jeremy Browne said: “This, coupled with the record number of people leaving drug treatment programmes free from dependency, is really positive news.”
