University researchers who want to help make the world a better place will have an opportunity to win £2,000 of funding tomorrow evening at an event run by researchers from University College London (UCL)
At the Focus On The Positive event on 31 January, each speaker, a graduate student or member of staff from the department of built environment, engineering and physical sciences, will spend five minutes describing a problem with the world and how they will fix it.
The evening will be hosted by stand-up comedian, Tom Price, who will encourage the audience to debate the issues before voting on what they’d like to support.
The winning speaker gets £2,000 to fund their plan while a runner-up will receive £1,000 to help with their project.
A previous Focus On The Positive evening saw the audience vote for a maths researcher, Dr Hannah Fry, who wanted to use her data about the London riots to produce a film on the link between where the riots happened, who took part, and their motivation. A runner-up, Michael Fell, proposed a project to work with a local school to set up a garden to teach children about responsibility, healthy eating and the environment.
