Climate change singer-songwriter tours UK

Singer-songwriter and eco-activist Jess Gold is currently touring the UK aiming to both educate and entertain with songs about climate change

The Animated Earth tour began at the end of August and is running until 13 October 2012. Jess and her folk band are playing 13 dates at venues throughout the UK including theatres, churches, bars and a prison. The tour is Jess’s first and marks the launch of her new album Project Earth Rock.

With song titles including Fossil Fools and Counting Carbon, Jess aims to combine her passion for environmental campaigning with her musical ability, in the hope of engaging with new audiences. “Songs are a fantastic way to raise awareness of environmental issues. It means that we can have fun and inspire each other at the same time,” she says.

Half of the shows will feature support from Luke Concannon. Luke was a songwriter in chart-topping band Nizlopi and plays a blend of soulful folk hip-hop.

As well as music, cartoonist Danny Fenster will create satirical cartoons during the shows using ideas offered by the crowd. At the end of each night the concert host will auction off the cartoon to the audience.

Susan Poupard of Friends of the Earth Camden, which held one of the Animated Earth concerts at St Pancras Church on 7 September, says: “You might assume that the show would be a little bit depressing, but cheeky and fun is probably the best way to describe it. Jess’s songs and her charismatic performance are a fantastically fresh way to reach people who don’t see themselves as activists but are happy to enter an open and friendly eco door.”

The tour is presented by Big Green Machine, a company that aims to bring together education, entertainment and environmental campaigning to inspire people to make more sustainable choices in their lives.
