A network of charging points at motorway service stations will allow electric vehicles to travel the length and breadth of Britain
The charging points, which will initially be installed at 12 Welcome Break services, are due for completion in September and will be powered by renewable energy company Ecotricity.
The locations have been chosen to allow electric motorists to drive from London to Edinburgh for free (the network can be accessed by registering for a free swipe card) and with reduced emissions.
There are already 400 charging points throughout the UK, 250 of which are in London. Their locations have restricted electric motorists from driving long distances, said Ecotricity founder, Dale Vince, who believes the new network will encourage the uptake of electric cars.
“Statistics show that it’s not in towns and cities where electric cars need to recharge, but on longer journeys between cities, and that means motorways,” said Vince.
Welcome Break plans to incorporate the top-up zones in all 27 of its service stations within the next 18 months.
