“World public opinion is now considered a superpower in its own right,” former Soviet President, Mikhail Gorbachev, told Earth Dialogues 2006 in Brisbane. “We have a responsibility to make use of this power to drive positive action for a sustainable future. It is our job at the Earth Dialogues to make this voice louder and stronger to ensure it reaches those people with the power to make changes. “We need to build a strong public consensus in support of peaceful, just and sustainable solutions to the crises which threaten our future. That is the mission of Green Cross International’s Earth Dialogues initiative.”As the Green Cross President, Mikhail Gorbachev was addressing government leaders, Nobel laureates and world experts united in their mission to inspire positive action. Subtitled the World Forum for Resource Management and Sustainable Development, the dialogues focused on Energy & Climate, Human Development & Economic Growth, and Cities & Spaces. Determined that the Forum would not just be another talk-fest’, a collective effort was made to create an action plan. On a personal level recommendations included: getting engaged in the political process to elevate sustainable development higher up the political agenda; accepting responsibilities as a citizen of a global community and taking steps towards a greener lifestyle. On a systemic level, there was a call for governments to endorse the Earth Charter as a guide to public policy and education, and a paradigm shift in governance with economies designed to meet our social and environmental goals with more participation to fully engage and empower the community. Green Cross International has on-going commitment to create a shift in global environmental consciousness. “I am confident that this event will make a huge contribution to strengthening the movement towards sustainable peace in our world,” Mikhail Gorbachev said.Contact websites: www.brisbanefestival.com.au/earthdialogues www.greencrossinternational.netMikhail Gorbachev addressing the Earth Dialogues 2006 ConferencePhoto: © Green Cross International
