In Italy there are over 300 organic school meals schemes since a law was passed in 1999 to promote the use of high quality and organic produce.

In some schools, children take turns to help with meal preparation. It is estimated that up to three times more money is spent on ingredients and the extra skilled staff needed to prepare fresh ingredients than in UK schools. In France around 300,000 organic meals are served each year in ten schools in Languedoc Rousillon and 400,000 a year in the Provence-Alpes-Cotes-d’Azur region.
In the city of Malmo, in Sweden, 60 per cent of publicly procured food is organic. In Gothenburg, a significant amount of organic food is used and companies tendering for contracts must show the environmental credentials of products. Denmark has one of the most comprehensive organic sourcing policies in Europe with nearly two-thirds of all municipalities using some organic produce.
